How It Works

  1. Enter your current grade percentage in the class.
  2. Enter the grade you want to get (Target Grade).
  3. Enter how much the final exam is worth (Weight).
  4. Click 'Calculate' to see what you need to score.

Formula:

Required Final = (Target - Current × (1 - Weight)) ÷ Weight

How Final Grade Calculation Works

Your final grade is a weighted average. This calculator reverses the weighted average formula to solve for the missing variable: the final exam score.

The heavier the weight of the final exam, the more impact it has on your overall grade. For example, if a final is worth 50%, it effectively averages directly with your current grade. If it's worth only 10%, it moves your grade much less.

Examples

Current 80%, Target 85%, Weight 30%

Result: 96.7% needed

Current 70%, Target 75%, Weight 40%

Result: 82.5% needed

Current 88%, Target 90%, Weight 20%

Result: 100% needed

Current 90%, Target 80%, Weight 20%

Result: 40% needed

Current 95%, Target 90%, Weight 50%

Result: 85% needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Can required score exceed 100%?

Yes. If your target grade is high enough compared to your current grade and the remaining weight, it might be mathematically impossible to reach without extra credit (e.g., needing 105%).

Does weight mean exam percentage?

Yes, 'weight' refers to what percentage of your total course grade the final exam is worth.

What if I need more than 100%?

This means even a perfect score on the final won't reach your target. You might need to ask for extra credit or lower your target grade slightly.

Does rounding matter?

Yes, small differences in decimals can affect the final score. It's best to use exact numbers if possible, but this calculator gives a very close estimate.

What if I don't know my current grade?

You'll need to calculate your current average first using your other assignment scores.
