How to convert Roman numerals?
Roman numerals use letters to represent values (I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000). To convert, add values if a larger letter precedes a smaller one (VI = 5+1 = 6), and subtract if a smaller letter precedes a larger one (IV = 5-1 = 4).
Rules
- Addition: VI (5+1), LX (50+10)
- Subtraction: IV (5-1), XC (100-10)
- No more than 3: You can't write IIII; use IV.
Worked Example
Convert MCMLXXIV.
- M = 1000
- CM = 900 (1000-100)
- L = 50
- XX = 20
- IV = 4
- Total: 1000 + 900 + 50 + 20 + 4 = 1974
Result: MCMLXXIV is 1974.
